When you play a team like Kentucky, you have to take advantage of any chances you get to get the ball back because that Wildcat defense has been stingy all year. You need as many offensive opportunities as possible. And a Kentucky touchdown could potentially put a game out of reach.

So when Florida forced a crucial three-and-out while down 10-0 near the end of the first quarter, it was huge.

The Gators were going to get the ball back with a chance to drive down the field and get within one score of the Wildcats at Kroger Field. The momentum shift was big.

And then the Gators committed a huge mistake on special teams.

Ray Davis may have put the game out of reach for Florida

In fact, Florida had a huge personal foul penalty on a Kentucky punt that gave the Wildcats the ball back at their own 25, and Ray Davis made the Gators pay.

Davis took the handoff and went 75 yards to the house to make the score 16-0 and that’s nearly an insurmountable lead for a team like Florida with a quarterback like Graham Mertz who has shown that he doesn’t play all that well against solid defenses. He’s struggled this season against teams like Utah and now Kentucky.

The talented Kentucky running back, on the other hand, has over 200 total yards in the first half of the game against Florida. He has shown up in a big way.

Florida’s mental mistake could cost it the game.
