Georgia football: 3 takeaways from blowout win over No. 20 Kentucky
2. The Georgia Bulldogs defense is only getting better
The Georgia Bulldogs’ defense is nasty. Let’s not get it twisted; their main weakness is in the rush defense, as they give up 113.4 yards per game (38th FBS, 5th SEC). In particular, the Georgia defense allowed 55 yards on 24 carries in this game. The one bright spot for the Wildcats was this year’s rush game. In their last game against Florida, Re’mahn Davis rushed for 280 yards on 26 carries. Georgia knew they had to shut down the run game and make Devin Leary beat you with his arm, which is what they did.
Georgia gave up 128 passing yards, well below their 165.4 passing yards allowed per game, which was to be anticipated because Devin Leary is not a world-beater as a quarterback. If you require him to win you a game against a legitimate defense, it assumably won’t happen.
To say that the Bulldogs defense was dominant would be a tremendous understatement. They allowed a total of 183 yards, under their average of 278.8 total yards. They didn’t get any takeaways in this contest, but it is optional when your defense stymies an opponent like this.
We can stop with the Georgia is struggling narrative. They beat the brakes off of Kentucky tonight.
