Tears were flowing from the stands (literally) following one of the worst losses in Colorado football history on Friday night.

The Buffaloes built a 29-0 lead at halftime and they looked like they were going to cruise to an easy win over a 1-4 Stanford team in Boulder, but things changed in a hurry. Stanford struck first in the second half and then reeled off 26 straight points to make it a 3-point game with about 13 minutes left, but Colorado answered with a quick scoring drive.

Up 36-26 with 11 minutes left in the game should have signaled the end of the Stanford comeback, but the defense just couldn’t get any stops.

Like any. At all. All half.

Charles Kelly’s defense could not figure it out which sent Deion Sanders into a rant on the sidelines in the second half when the game got close.

And then the unthinkable happened.

Colorado football’s meltdown will be remembered

The 10-point lead in the fourth quarter melted away quicker than the Buffaloes built it up, going into overtime thanks to a last-second field goal by Stanford.

And then in overtime, a touchdown by Colorado was matched by a first-play, insane grab in the end zone by Stanford. And then a Shedeur Sanders pick in the second overtime put the game away for the Cardinal. The meltdown was complete. Stanford stormed back down 29-0 to beat Colorado on the road with the Buffaloes in desperate need of this win in order to attain bowl eligibility eventually.

Sanders couldn’t believe his eyes as the game-winning field goal split the uprights and I think the nation was just as shocked. That will go down as the worst loss of the week.

Just inexcusable.

There’s no way the offense should have stalled out completely in the second half and even worse, the defense couldn’t get a single stop. Just an incredible loss that will have the college football world buzzing until noon kickoff on Saturday.
