Caleb Williams invokes ‘Game of Thrones’ in response to fan criticism
Reigning Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams has been under the microscope all season long, and after his forgettable performance against Notre Dame, he finally pushed back a little.
Caleb Wiliams had one of the worst performances of his young career against Notre Dame. The USC quarterback threw three interceptions and had a QB rating of just 55.7 in Week 7’s 20-48 loss to the Fighting Irish.
A fan who had rushed the field with thousands of other Notre Dame fans got into Williams’s face and made some remarks about his painted fingernails, which Williams paints before every game.
When talking to reporters on the Wednesday following the game, Willams referenced the fan and even pulled out a little Game of Thrones in his response.
"“I mean, everybody wants to be in these two [size] 12.5 shoes right here. I’m not worried about some kid running out on the field that doesn’t have anything really associated to Notre Dame other than possibly their family going there or him going there himself. Got a lot of guys over here that I’ve got to lead, so some opinion of a sheep, lions don’t worry about that stuff. Keep moving on, keep fighting. Fight on.”"
The lions not worrying about the opinions of sheep is an old adage, but it was made even more famous by Tywin Lannister in Season 1 of the hit HBO series.
Lannister was the unquestioned leader of his house for a good part of the series, and it’s obvious Williams sees himself as the leader and face of his football team.
The preseason Heisman favorite really dinged his chances at repeating, and the loss to Notre Dame will be a big hurdle for USC when looking at their College Football Playoff hopes.
You have to love a kid with the moxie to invoke one of the most ruthless fictional leaders ever seen on screen. Makes you wonder if he won’t Tebow the rest of this season and completely ball out with the Trojans on his shoulders.
