Alabama Football: 3 Takeaways from win over Tennessee
By Dante Pryor
Alabama football defensive takeaways.
The Crimson Tide defense was the MVP this afternoon. The defense shut Tennessee out in the second half and kept Alabama in the game by forcing field goals in the first half. Alabama’s front seven limited the Volunteer running game that was dominant a week before.
Joe Milton threw for just 100 yards against Texas A&M last week, while the Volunteers ran for 232 yards and 4.7 yards per rush. This week was a different story. Tennesee ran for 133 yards but 3.5 yards per carry. Tennessee’s inability to run affected the rhythm of the offense.
Milton threw for 271 yards and two touchdowns but was ineffective in the second half. Defensive coordinator Kevin Steele did an outstanding job of adjusting to what the offense did in the first half. One thing Steele and the Alabama defense did was not let the slot receiver burn them like last season.

The Volunteers struggled to stop the deep pass this afternoon. Five of Milroe’s 14 completions were 15 yards or longer. Alabama did a better job of running the football, but they had only two runs of 10 yards or longer. They did take advantage of Milroe holding the football too long at times, sacking him four times.
