Is Quinn Ewers playing vs BYU? Latest injury updates

Last week against Houston, Quinn Ewers got off to a hot start and Texas jumped out to a 21-0 lead with its third touchdown at the start of the second quarter. Ewers threw for 211 yards on 23 of 29 passing with two first-quarter TD passes, but his day got worse as the lead dwindled and he was forced to leave after spraining his throwing shoulder.

Ewers will not start against BYU and instead, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian will turn to redshirt freshman Maalik Murphy over freshman Arch Manning. Murphy relieved Ewers last week and went 1/2 passing for seven yards.

With Murphy in the game, Texas leaned heavily on the run game and they were able to add an insurance score to win 31-24. Now, Murphy will make his first career start against another Big 12 newbie.

Ewers has thrown for 1,915 yards while completing 70.9% of his passes for an average of 9.0 yards per attempt. He has 13 passing touchdowns to just three interceptions in his second season as the Longhorns’ starting QB. Murphy has just eight career pass attempts and four completions for 47 yards.

Arch Manning will serve as Murphy’s backup for his first start. Manning has yet to attempt a collegiate pass and when asked about the potential for him to get some reps against the Cougars, Sarkisian seemed open to the possibility.

Sarkisian told reporters, “I do think there’s some valuable experience for him in that, but I have to make sure that’s in the best interest of the team.”

We wont’ see Quinn Ewers for the Longhorns in Week 9 at home against BYU, but we could see Arch Manning come off the bench.
