5 college football teams on the verge of collapsing into full rebuild
Things are getting rather uncomfortable, awkward or downright unacceptable for a handful of college football teams now that we’re deep into the 2023 season
It’s that time of the year when college football coaching hot seats are starting to get a little warmer than warm. For some, they’ve been in place for years, pumping out continuously mediocre results. For others, the coach may not be who we thought they were— maybe that one season really was an outlier.
Either way, with the current state of college football, Athletic Directors are not shy to course correct and fire someone they once touted as being the ones to bring their respective football programs to prosperity.
The good news is, for the teams on this list, rebuilds don’t seem to take nearly as long as they used to back in the day. Look at what Brian Kelly did in his first season at LSU, Dan Lanning at Oregon, Mike Elko at Duke and on some levels, Deion Sanders at Colorado. To be fair, the Buffaloes had nowhere to go but up, but they sure have enjoyed a windfall of season ticket sales, merchandising sales, and an influx of talent-rich recruits in just one season.
Your team’s fortunes can turn around seemingly overnight, but it takes the equivalent of hitting the coaching jackpot. For the teams mentioned in this list, it might be time to cash-in your chips and call it a day. A fresh start and the promise of potential await you on the other side.
Before we dive in, a note: It’s never fun pulling the plug or seeing someone you once liked or rooted for lose their job, but these are public figures getting paid large sums of money to coach the game of football. They’re subject to scrutiny and criticism, but we are not rooting or hoping for anyone to lose their job. Unfortunately, head coaches are the face of their respective college football team’s and when things aren’t going right, the buck stops with them.
With that said, let’s take a look at five college football teams who are teetering on the brink of a rebuild.
