3 takeaways from the first College Football Playoff rankings
Texas has the most impressive win
Steve Sarkisian said this week that Texas had the best win in college football this season and it seems like the College Football Playoff selection committee agrees.
The biggest hint is that the Longhorns were ranked ahead of Oklahoma in the first set of rankings, despite the fact that Oklahoma beat Texas.
Texas also beat Alabama, on the road. The Longhorns are the only team to beat a top-10 opponent on the road this season in college football. Florida State did beat LSU on a neutral field and Washington beat Oregon at home, but the win on the road was impressive, especially against Bama and Nick Saban.
The Longhorns are still going to need Washington to lose. As long as Texas wins the Big 12 title, I see the Longhorns being ranked ahead of the Ohio State-Michigan loser.
I also don’t believe it’s automatic that Oregon gets ranked ahead of Texas if both teams finish 12-1 and win their respective conference championships. It will be an interesting debate, but Texas has a path to the College Football Playoff if it can win out and get some help.
