1. Oregon vs. Alabama
Despite the Ducks’ success being much more recent than any of the programs mentioned above (the Crimson Tide included), it still remains as the most notable college football matchup that has never happened in recent memory.
The two programs have a lot of ties between each other, ranging from Oregon’s two most recent head coaches, Mario Cristobal and Dan Lanning, being former Nick Saban assistants, to Alabama’s current athletic director, Greg Byrne, being the son of former Oregon AD Bill Byrne as well as spending a lot of his life in Eugene.
This matchup, just like Notre Dame vs. Auburn, could have actually happened, but this time, in more than one occasion, with many infamous examples being Oregon’s loss to Stanford in 2012 that cost them a chance at the national championship, the Sugar Bowl committee bypassing Oregon in favor of Oklahoma for the Sooners to play against Alabama in the 2014 Sugar Bowl, and the first ever College Football Playoff, where Alabama’s loss to eventual national champion Ohio State cost once again the chance of a highly anticipated Ducks vs. Tide matchup.
With the current debate of who deserves the higher ranking between both programs (who currently sit at one loss), it would be neat to finally see a matchup that was highly requested and anticipated by many people at the end of the BCS era, and, with both programs constantly competing for a national championship, it’s likely they could meet in the expanded playoff, beginning next year.
