3 head coaching candidates Texas A&M football should avoid
Texas A&M football has an opening for a head coach and here are three candidates that the Aggies should stay away from.
The head-coaching changes in college football have been wild, but there isn’t a bigger job open right now than Texas A&M football head coach.
Jimbo Fisher was given a massive deal to make the Aggies a national title contender and despite signing the best recruiting class ever, Texas A&M football never came close.
The Aggies never even seriously contended in the SEC West. Texas A&M football was right to fire Fisher and there are a number of quality candidates.
Dan Campbell of the Detroit Lions was said to be on the list, but I highly doubt he’s going to walk away from what he’s built, especially as the Lions are gearing up for a playoff run.
Yet, there is no shortage of big names being connected to Texas A&M football. Heck, some candidates have already been interviewed.
Either way, this is a key point in Texas A&M football history and if the Aggies are going to be competitive in the new SEC with Oklahoma and Texas joining, they have to get this hire right.
And with that in mind, here are three head-coaching candidates Texas A&M football should avoid.
Deion Sanders, Colorado
Coach Prime is on the watch list for Texas A&M football and I’ll admit I thought the move made sense. But after watching Coach Prime do his thing at Colorado, I just don’t know if he would jump ship for the SEC just yet.
Beyond that, I don’t know that he’s ready. Colorado started hot this season, but the Buffaloes have only one conference win. They did beat TCU which doesn’t look like it will even make a bowl game, as well as Nebraska, which is 5-5, and Colorado State, which has a losing record.
The only other win was over Arizona State — another team with a losing record. Oh, and Colorado had to rally to win three of those four games, so if Shedeur Sanders wasn’t playing quarterback, this team would probably have the same record as last season.
If Sanders and Travis Hunter could join Sanders in College Station, that would help, but the NCAA has been pretty clear about the policy of allowing second-time transfers to play right away.
Without those guys, Coach Prime isn’t ready for Texas A&M football. He might never be and the Aggies need a proven winner, although that’s what Fisher was supposed to be.
Sanders could be a great college football coach. But it just seems too risky to give him a ton of money to leave Colorado when he hasn’t even done all that much there.
I’m of the opinion that Texas A&M football can do better.
