Jeff Traylor, UTSA

I’m not sure why, but it has been reported that Texas A&M football has interviewed Jeff Traylor of Texas San Antonio for its head coaching job.

Traylor isn’t a big name, but he’s well-known in Texas. He’s also done a stellar job of recruiting the state of Texas and building UTSA into a legitimate college football program.

I have no doubt that Traylor is going to be a power-5 head coach someday. I think he’ll be a good one, but it feels like his first big job should be at a place like Baylor, not Texas A&M.

Texas A&M is the kind of program that is determined to win the press conference, which is another reason I don’t see Traylor getting hired. He was mentioned for the Nebraska job a little bit, but even that seemed like a stretch.

So going to Texas A&M and expecting him to start beating Texas and Alabama seems like wishful thinking. The SEC isn’t the American and in my opinion, a dude like Dan Lanning or someone with a history in the SEC is the best way to go.

I’d keep pushing for Lanning and maybe even Lane Kiffin. But I wouldn’t call Coach Prime, Dabo, or Jeff Traylor (too late) if I were in charge of the Texas A&M head-coaching search.
