Auburn football has always been an erratic program. Its history is littered with up-and-down records from year to year. It seems as though once every decade or so, the Tigers follow up a losing season with a special year.

This chaos has created a plethora of great moments in the program’s lifetime, but it has also provided the conditions for some true devastation.

One of those moments came against on Saturday against New Mexico State. The Tigers didn’t just lose, they were thoroughly dominated in historic fashion.

It was the kind of loss that immediately enters into the annals of pain. It was such a defeat that the history of Auburn football was instantly reset. There’s a new hierarchy of low points on the plains.

So, where exactly does the New Mexico State loss reside in that hierarchy?

The Criteria

Evaluating the worst losses in Auburn football history is an inexact science. Some games were mostly good performances ruined by late-game mistakes. Some games weren’t egregious defeats, but they indicated the end of a successful era on the plains. Some games were just downright embarrassing and humiliating.

Pain. Missed opportunity. Humiliation. Embarrassment. It’s all on the table, and it’s all taken into consideration.

Again, this is an inexact science, but when it comes to Auburn, is anything precise or exact? No, it’s all chaos.
