College Football Playoff rankings Nos. 1-5

5. Florida State Seminoles (11-0, -1): Is it time to panic in Tallahassee yet? Star senior quarterback Jordan Travis is out for the season with a leg injury, and it took a moment for the Seminoles to adjust, being down 13-3 at the end of the first quarter against FCS opponent North Alabama. Obviously, they bounced back but it brings the rest of the Seminoles’ season into doubt. A visit to Gainesville that was supposed to be a pretty tame season-closing game now holds a big question mark overhead. Tate Rodemaker leads Florida State into Florida on Saturday.

4. Washington Huskies (11-0, +1): After a road win 22-20 against No. 11 Oregon State, Washington jumps into the playoff echelon. Senior quarterback Michael Penix Jr. (162 passing yards, two passing touchdowns, and another score on the ground) fought off the elements and connected with Rome Odunze for two touchdowns and 106 yards. Earlier this season, the Apple Cup looked like it would be a highly contested, ranked matchup although it has lost its luster with Wazzu’s disappointing second half of the season. The Huskies will have a rematch with either No. 6 Oregon or No. 16 Arizona the following weekend in the final Pac-12 Championship in Las Vegas.

3. Michigan Wolverines (11-0, NC): The Wolverines survive a closer-than-expected trip to Maryland, winning 31-24. Junior quarterback JJ McCarthy was dull, only putting up 141 yards and an interception. Maryland could not handle Blake Corum, bleeding 94 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. The Wolverines host Ohio State in “The Game” which will guarantee one of these powerhouse programs finishes the regular season at 11-1 and without a conference championship appearance.

2. Ohio State Buckeyes (11-0, NC): Ohio State destroyed Minnesota 37-3 in their final tune-up for the Big House ahead of “The Game.” Junior quarterback Kyle McCord gave another great performance, with 212 passing yards and two touchdowns. TreVeyon Henderson also went off, tallying 146 rushing yards and two scores. The Buckeyes have a big test ahead, going into the Big House. I would not want to be a quarterback when it’s third-and-long in Michigan territory.

1. Georgia Bulldogs (11-0, NC): The Bulldogs have never been more favored to win their third in a row after their third multiple-possession win over a ranked opponent. Junior quarterback Carson Beck threw for 298 yards and three touchdowns. Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint pulled in 91 receiving yards and two touchdowns. This win extends the Georgia win streak to 28 straight wins, tying Alabama for the longest in SEC history. The Bulldogs travel to Georgia Tech on Saturday, looking for consecutive win No. 29.
