6 potential landing spots for Maalik Murphy in transfer portal
USC
I don't know that USC is going to be the best fit for a multi-year guy like Maalik Murphy. The Trojans have Malachi Nelson as a freshman and the five-star is probably looking to play sooner rather than later.
Nelson has four years of eligibility left. Maalik Murphy has three after not playing at all in the 2022 season. It would be an interesting competition, but I don't know if that's what Murphy wants to walk into after an ultra-competitive QB room at Texas.
Will Howard or another quarterback that's more proven could be a better fit. Yet, Murphy is from California and Lincoln Riley is the quarterback guru.
UCLA
One team that could really use a talent upgrade in the quarterback room is UCLA. The Bruins just lost former five-star quarterback Dante Moore to the transfer portal. That whole situation was bad and it's right to wonder if Chip Kelly is still going to be viewed as a quality coach for quarterbacks.
Still, Murphy could probably walk in the door and start for the Bruins. Ethan Garbers and Collin Schlee both have eligibility remaining and should return next season.
But that sounds like a recipe for another 7-5 season. If that happens, Chip Kelly won't have a job anymore, so he should look at adding someone like Maalik Murphy. I haven't seen the Bruins connected with any quartebacks, outside of Dillon Gabriel who went to Oregon.
Murphy wants to play, is from California, and Kelly needs a talented quarterback, so it makes sense for all sides.
