After Tyler Van Dyke left the program, Jacurri Brown knew he had a tall task ahead of him. He would be tasked with trying to lead Miami football in the Pinstripe Bowl as the QB1.

There had been rumors for weeks about him potentially leaving the program and entering the transfer portal. But he had one final opportunity to prove that he deserved the starting job with the Hurricanes for next season. Unfortunately, it came in a losing effort against the Scarlet Knights on Thursday afternoon as Rutgers' defense played well enough to earn the win.

But Brown wasn't the issue.

In fact, the sophomore quarterback and former four-star was 20-for-31 through the air for 181 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. He also rushed for 57 yards and two more scores in a rain-soaked Pinstripe Bowl. He was the offense for the Hurricanes when it felt like no one else could step up.

Brown's lone touchdown pass was on a beautiful dart to Xavier Restrepo to give the Hurricanes a 17-10 lead early in the third quarter. He showed his potential as a passer with that throw and really put Mario Cristobal on notice. Plus, he didn't even get his all into the throw and made it look easy.

So did he do enough to win over Cristobal for the QB1 job in 2024? It's tough to say, but this was not a negative performance against a solid defense in poor weather conditions. I mean, he's used to Miami weather so it's not like you can fault him for a couple of mistakes.

It felt like Brown grew a ton throughout the game and I'd be shocked if he didn't stick around through spring and try to earn that starting job for next season.
