It’s nearly impossible to replace Drake Maye. Maye carried Mack Brown’s team in 2022 and 2023, so the flaws of this UNC roster will likely be revealed in 2024 without him. However, Brown did about as well as you can, bringing in veteran Max Johnson from Texas A&M to start at quarterback.

Johnson came as a package deal with his brother, tight end Jake Johnson, who caught 24 passes for 235 yards as a sophomore for the Aggies last year. Brown also addressed the offensive line with Howard Sampson from North Texas, Austin Blaske from Georgia, and Zach Greenburg from Division III Muhlenberg College in Pennsylvania.

However, the Tar Heels finished 97th in total defense and failed to improve on that side of the ball. Brown’s only addition was safety Jakeen Harris from NC State.
