Why Boston College deserves more credit than it’s gotten

While the SEC takes most of the mainstream spotlight for its warzone of a leaderboard, the ACC has quietly been navigating through some chaos of its own, and one team staying afloat surprisingly well in spite of it all is Boston College.

With a record of 4-4 on the season so far, the Boston College Eagles are not only far from the lamest Atlantic Coast power out there, but are also one of the more disrespected teams with how heavily their work’s been overlooked.

Now, some may wonder “what work? They’re sitting at .500 with their fair share of hideous losses. That doesn’t exactly make for much to respect.” However, those people often fail to grasp a simple condition tied to matters like these—relative speaking.

In other words, when we say the Eagles are making serious strides in turning things around, we’re saying so in relation to the recent impression they’ve given us. In this case, that’s 2-10.

Is it easy to shrug that record off as an outlier, especially when compared to the one before it? Sure, but it nonetheless happened, and I can only imagine it felt legitimate enough to leave many BC fans bracing for whatever would follow it up. Once you’re looking through that lens, 4-4 doesn’t sound so bad, huh?

But I didn’t ramble on this far just to say that 4-4 is cool; rather, I think that start can help Boston College get as far as a bowl game, which is nothing to scoff at when you know who all awaits them.

The Eagles’ last month of the regular season consists of Florida State, at Notre Dame, Syracuse, and at Miami—ouch, that’s a gauntlet…or is it?

Look at what is clearly the weaker half of that stretch, FSU and ‘Cuse. The Seminoles are coming off a convincing defeat that was the final push needed to get head coach Mike Norvell out the door once and for all. Now they gotta hike all the way up to Chestnut Hill in their first game under interim rule? Not particularly ideal.

As for the Orange, they’re also a shaky squad that has the displeasure of facing the Eagles in enemy territory. Now yes, I know the former just beat a ranked SMU, but with all due respect, the Mustangs have indicated to us time and time again this season that they’re not all that. And even if they are, we need to remember that BC knows better than anyone just how little bearing outliers have on dictating a team’s future.

If the Eagles can down those guys, who cares if the Irish and Hurricanes were to each blast them 100-0? They’d still have the six wins required for bowl eligibility. And let’s be real—the plan was never to define their season by how they handled those powerhouses.

Say what you want about Boston College, but if it can make just a little more noise, it can strike the postseason a mere year after having one of the darkest runs in its time as an ACC program. Considering how rough of a ride the Eagles were “supposed” to endure with their 2026 schedule, I see little room for complaint.
