When you talk about college football, certain legendary names automatically come to mind. You think about John Heisman, you think about Knute Rockne, you think about Doak Walker, and you have to think about the great Davey O’Brien, who wore number 8 for the TCU Horned Frogs from from 1935-38.

Coming out of Woodrow Wilson High School in Dallas, Tx., O’Brien didn’t rack up any ungodly numbers at TCU, as he was a backup during his first two seasons and really didn’t take any snaps. But once he became the starter in 1937, he flung the ball as well as anyone ever had.

O’Brien led the Horned Frogs to an undefeated season and national championship in 1938, capped off by a 15-7 victory over Carnegie Tech in the Sugar Bowl. That was the season that O’Brien was named to 13 different All-American teams, and became the first player to win the Heisman, Maxwell and Walter Camp awards in the same year.

Now he has an award named after him, given to the country’s best quarterback every season.

That 1938 season was the last time TCU won a national championship, or had a Heisman Trophy winner. The Frogs are hoping to break both streaks in 2015.
