Initially the length of the suspension and the reason for the suspension were unknown in King’s report, but moments later multiple reports indicated Oakman and Orion Stewart are suspended one game for a violation of team rules.

The always vague “violation of team rules” can be any number of things so it’s not worth speculating. The 6-9, 280-pound Oakman is a potential All-American after having 11 sacks and 19.5 tackles for loss last year and likely will be taken very high in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft.

Stewart had 81 tackles last year from his safety position and tied for the team lead with four interceptions last year. He sat out spring practice as he recovered from a shoulder surgery but was ready a preseason All-Big 12 selection.

Baylor opens against SMU who went 1-11 last year so it’s very likely Oakman and Stewart would have been done by halftime anyway with the Bears taking a presumed massive lead into halftime.

But this is the first strike for both the players so should something happen again that forces Baylor head coach Art Briles to discipline two of his best players, the suspension could be longer and come against an opponent where they’d actually need both players to help the team get a win.
