Losing the season opener to Wisconsin might have been the nail in the coffin to Les Miles’ career with the LSU Tigers, but luckily for him, it was the first game. Many people in the athletic department, and even some alumni, are calling for his job, but if he rebounds with an SEC title and a playoff appearance, that chatter will cease.

The Tigers will play their first SEC game of the year and its a first step for the head coach to prove himself. Brandon Harris began the season with a short leash at starting quarterback and after a mediocre performance through one-plus games, he has given way to Purdue-transfer Danny Etling. The first-year Tiger has passed for 100 yards and a touchdown on just 6-of-14 completions.

Shockingly, sophomore running back Derrius Guice is leading the team in rushing over junior Heisman candidate Leonard Fournette through two games. Fournette has 138 yards on 23 carries with no touchdowns while Guice has 158 yards on 21 rushes, adding in a score. The running game is strong, to say the least.

Mississippi State’s opening game was just as disappointing, if not more, than LSU’s. While the Tigers’ contest was against a much more competitive team, they were expecting a win, but the Bulldogs played a South Alabama foe and thought a win was guaranteed — that did not turn out to be the case.

Damian Williams looked solid at quarterback despite a Week 1 loss, completing 20-of-28 for 143 yards and a touchdown. He didn’t play against South Carolina, though, giving way to Nick Fitzgerald who was 19-for-32 with 178 yards, two scores and a pick. The clear starter remains to be seen.

Fitzgerald might be the leader because of his elite running skills, leading the Bulldogs with 206 yards on just 19 carries. Williams has 93 yards on 12 touchdowns, ranking third on the team.
