Michael Dyer Saga Continues: Running Back Dismissed From Arkansas State

Michael Dyer was denied eligibility to play at Arkansas State in 2012 earlier this month. Now, it is apparent Dyer will not play there ever.

The talented running back was dismissed from the RedWolves squad on Sunday night, leaving a promising but troubled career in limbo. Dyer transferred to ASU amid an investigation into weapons charges last winter. He followed former Auburn offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn to ASU, and applied for a hardship waiver from the NCAA.

Despite his request being denied, Dyer reaffirmed his commitment to the program and negated rumors that he would transfer to defending Division II champion Pittsburg State.

Malzahn’s statement did not specify the nature of Dyer’s dismissal, only that he coach was “truly disappointed that it didn’t work out” for Dyer at ASU.

Pittsburg State reemerging as a possibility will be an item worth following. Dyer would have eligibility to play there in 2012, assuming he fulfills academic requirements. The same is true for any Div. II or Championship Subdivision program. Another fellow former SEC back found success in FCS, Washaun Ealey. Ealey was Jacksonville State’s leading rusher in 2011 after his dismissal from Georgia.

Football might be the least of Dyer’s concerns at present, though. Ultimately, it’s paramount he address his issues off the field first.
