Garnet and Cocky
The South Carolina Gamecocks got smacked in the mouth with a big reality check in the opening game of the season. In addition to the sheer level of surprise at how good Texas A&M’s offense was in the game, we also had to accept the fact that the Gamecocks have some serious issues on defense. Obviously, major losses up front, including Jadeveon Clowney, were noticeable as Kenny Hill of Texas A&M had all day to throw the football. Add in the fact that the group is in the process of a switch to a 3-4 defense this year, one of the most difficult adjustments in college football, and it’s not that crazy to see how their defense could have been torched. It doesn’t get much easier this week.

The Gamecocks face an East Carolina team that has a senior quarterback in Shane Carden, who completed 70 percent of his passes last week for 283 yards, 3 touchdown, and no interceptions. All he did there was pick up where he left off last year, when he threw for 4,139 yards and 33 touchdowns to only 10 interceptions while completing 70 percent of his passes throughout the year. Carden is more than capable of torching this Gamecocks defense, and a win against South Carolina wold make a great statement for the American Athletic Conference and East Carolina, who just got out of the Conference USA and is trying to prove that it belongs with the big boys of college football.
Prediction
This is going to be a much tougher game than South Carolina fans would like. The Pirates will turn this into a shootout with Carden, forcing Dylan Thompson to make some nice throws and the running game to step up. Luckily, Steve Spurrier will be able to pull this one out in the fourth quarter, but expect a barn burner.
