Saturday Blitz Pac 12 Power Rankings Week 2
Rich Rodriguez finally decided to play the long-game at quarterback this season, choosing redshirt freshman Anu Solomon over senior Jesse Scroggins. Scroggins is a polished veteran who would have fit Rodriguez’s system perfectly. But if RichRod had gone with the USC transfer, that would have meant starting next season with his 4th quarterback in 4 years.
Instead, he went with the young Solomon and his four remaining years of eligibility. In week 1, it looked like a great tradeoff. UA’s offense ran roughshod over UNLV. But on Thursday night in the Alamodome, the experienced defense of UT-San Antonio exposed some weaknesses in the young QB. Solomon had happy feet in the pocket and threw a lot of balls up for grabs when pressured.
RichRod’s spread attack is still formidable in the run game, even without Ka’Deem Carey, and Solomon will benefit from throwing to the best receiving corps in the entire Pac. But expect teams with a strong front 7 to give the Cats problems for the foreseeable future.
