Saturday Blitz SEC Power Rankings Week 5

14. Vanderbilt Commodores, 1-4 (0-3), Lost to Kentucky Wildcats 17-7 Last Saturday

This is honestly kind of sad because the Commodores are looking like a much better team right now than the team that started the season. Perhaps Derek Mason won’t be fired after all. But in a loaded conference, even in the worse division, there’s not much hope for this team. And losing badly to Temple in the opener really hurt.

Now, after the loss to Kentucky, the Commodores have lost all hope at a bowl game this year. There’s no way Vanderbilt can win three conference games on the schedule. That’s what it’s going to take to get to 6 wins. The offense still has nothing, and Mason’s most questionable decision has been who starts at quarterback. Wade Freebeck should not be allowed to go back in the rest of the year after the pathetic showing he had Saturday.

If you want some good news, Vanderbilt’s defense may be getting better, and there’s still a bright future here. But that also requires perspective, given the fact that they played a Kentucky team that has yet to prove itself on offense this year.  So really, there’s no tangible sign of encouragement for the Commodores yet. That’s why they’re last.
