Saturday Blitz Big 12 Power Rankings Week 5

3. TCU Horned Frogs, 3-0 (0-0), Defeated SMU Mustangs 56-0 Last Saturday

Look out college football world, but a former mid-major powerhouse is now making its case as a Power Five powerhouse. The TCU Horned Frogs don’t have much to brag about coming off of a blowout win against the SMU Mustangs, but since it followed a blowout win against a good Minnesota team, this is clearly a very good football team that needs the chance to prove itself further.

The chance comes this weekend with the Oklahoma Sooners coming to town. The Horned Frogs have led a very balanced offense, 19th in passing and 38th in rushing, to the Top 10 in scoring with 44.7 points per game. But what’s scary with this team so far is the dominant defense, which pitched a shutout last Saturday and has only given up 21 points on the year so far. This is a very good team, and Gary Patterson finally has them ready to prove what they wanted to prove when joining the Big 12.

But, with Minnesota as the only legitimate win, it’s still hard to get a read on this team right now. They are very high on this list because of their undefeated record, but that is only three games into the season for them with Samford and SMU on the schedule. For TCU to prove it belongs on this list, it needs to play well over the next few weeks.
