Georgia Bulldogs’ running back Todd Gurley suspended for an ‘alleged violation of NCAA rules’ because of an investigation over autographs

Many consider Georgia Bulldogs’ running back Todd Gurley to be the best player in college football and the front runner to win the Heisman Trophy.

Although Todd Gurley may be the country’s best player, he likely isn’t going to be the front-runner to win the Heisman.  Todd Gurley has been suspended for an “alleged violation of NCAA rules.”

According to Seth Emerson of The Macon Telegraph, it involves autographs.

"Two sources also confirmed to The Telegraph that the Gurley investigation involved whether he received money in exchange for his autograph.UGA announced the blockbuster news on its own Thursday evening, saying that Gurley had been suspended by UGA “during an ongoing investigation into an alleged violation of NCAA rules.” It was UGA that suspended Gurley, not the NCAA, and is conducting the investigation for now."

According to Andy Staples of Sports Illustrated, a man paid Todd Gurley $400 to sign 80 items on campus.

"SI.com has learned that a person confirmed to Georgia’s compliance office this week that he paid Gurley $400 to sign 80 items on campus in Athens, Ga., one day this past spring. The person claimed to have a photo and video of Gurley signing the items, but neither the photo nor the video showed money changing hands. NCAA rules require schools to immediately declare a player ineligible if they discover a violation has been committed. Schools may then apply for the player’s reinstatement. Reached by text message on Thursday afternoon, Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity declined comment."

The 13th-ranked Bulldogs have a key SEC showdown at the 23rd-ranked Missouri Tigers Saturday. They will kick-off at noon EST and the game is on CBS.
