Mississippi State Deserves to be No. 1; It’s Not Even Close
Mississippi State Bulldogs Beat Auburn Tigers 38-23
Player of the Game: Dak Prescott-18/34 for 246 Yards and 1 Touchdown; 21 Carries for 121 Yards and 2 Touchdowns
I would like to issue a formal apology to the Mississippi State Bulldogs. For three games in a row, I picked against them. And for three games in a row, they have proven me wrong.
It’s not like they haven’t gained my respect. After last week’s win over Texas A&M, I said they were currently the best team in college football. But I still couldn’t bring myself to pick them against Auburn.
Despite the fact that they were my No. 1 team, they were playing the Tigers at home, and they had just proven me wrong twice, I still picked Auburn to pull of what would be an “upset” in my book.
And once again, they made a fool out of me. I’m done. I surrender. I’m making a vow to pick the Bulldogs to win every time they play from here on out.
Dak Prescott didn’t have a great game throwing. He threw 2 interceptions against a great Auburn defense. But he also managed 246 yards passing and a touchdown. And on the ground, he added 121 yards and 2 touchdowns. Despite 2 interceptions, he was once again the reason for the Bulldogs pulling out the win.
And once again, Mississippi State didn’t just win. They won convincingly.
This whole saga got started with a 5-point win at LSU, but that game should have been a 20-point win. The Bulldogs honestly blew them out. Two weeks later, last Saturday, they destroyed Texas A&M. And this week they beat Auburn by 15. These are three teams they destroyed who were in the Top 5 at the time.
Who else can say that?
Who else can say they blew out three Top 5 teams? Who else can say that they are dominating the SEC West teams at the moment? This is insane, and it comes from a school that has traditionally the worst football history of anybody in that division. But not this year.

Dan Mullen has built a powerhouse in Starkville. Skip Bayless has said they are the Auburn of last year, but that’s honestly an insult. Auburn was pulling out miracle wins. Mississippi State is blowing people out.
And they might not be done.
Being in the SEC West, the Bulldogs still have a tough schedule the rest of the way. Ole Miss and Alabama are still on the slate, and both of them are road games. A road game against Kentucky is also on the schedule, and Arkansas is not to be taken lightly.
But after what they have done, can you be surprised if they run the table?
This is a complete team. Josh Robinson would have a case to be a Heisman candidate if Prescott wasn’t his teammate.
And don’t sleep on the defense, which might be better than the offense. Don’t forget that this unit has given fits to two of the most high-powered offenses in the SEC the past two weeks in Auburn and Texas A&M. Jay Hughes and Justin Cox both came down with interceptions, and Richie Brown is another star in the secondary. Will Redmond is turning into a good player at linebacker. But Bernardrick McKinney is the real star, and he should be a first-round draft pick in the NFL. This is a defense loaded with stars and playmakers everywhere.
And it’s a team that looks great.
Mississippi State gets a well-deserved bye week before their game against Kentucky.
It’s still weird to see, and not many people are going to trust them against the Tide or the Rebels. But they have the body of work to stake their claim as the best team in the country right now.
And after being wrong three times in a row, I pledge right now to pick Mississippi State to win every game from here on out until they lose one. I’m done betting against them.
Just pray that I’m not jinxing you guys Bulldog Nation.
