Saturday Blitz ACC Power Rankings Week 7

Virginia Tech is back in rhythm after two straight wins, and this was a good time for their bye week to come. The quality win against Ohio State has to count for something, but we can’t ignore the two straight losses to East Carolina and Georgia Tech, and the two wins following weren’t great wins. Because of that, and because they didn’t play this past weekend, we had to knock them down below teams that looked good last Saturday.

Michael Brewer can easily move this team up the list on these power rankings if he learns to do one thing: not turn the ball over. But with 11 interceptions already on the year, he’s shown nothing for us to believe that’s a possibility. He can make plays, but if he keeps having these turnovers, we don’t have a lot of faith in this team. If he cuts down on those turnovers, though, they will make believers out of us. The defense is giving up fewer than 20 points a game, and the offense has shown balance. So limit turnovers, and our expectations raise.

And they’ll raise dramatically. With Pitt on the schedule this week followed by Miami, Boston College, Duke, Wake Forest, and Virginia, the Hokies are more than capable of winning out if they fix their issues. This team could easily reach 10-2, but it could also fall to 6-6. Whichever one happens is up to Brewer’s ability to not turn the ball over so much.

And until he proves that, we’re not putting his team above this spot.
