Saturday Blitz SEC Power Rankings Week 7

The bye week for South Carolina could not have come at a better time. After looking awful against Vanderbilt, the worst team in the conference, and then losing to Missouri and Kentucky, this team has gone from being a national title contender to having us question whether or not they are decent. That’s a huge drop-off from what we expected. And it’s hurt them in our power rankings.

Connor Shaw is clearly a bigger loss than we would have thought at quarterback, as were the members of the Gamecocks’ defensive front. Spurrier’s decision to hire a coordinator who would switch to a 3-4 defense has made things even tougher. All of those things compounded with an SEC schedule has put this team at .500. And how did they ever beat Georgia?

Fortunately for these Gamecocks, the slate still includes Furman, Tennessee, Florida, and South Alabama. Unfortunately, it also includes Auburn and Clemson. This team could easily be looking at 7-5. And given the early-season expectations, that’s a huge disappointment.

So for that, we have to put the Gamecocks this far down on our SEC Power Rankings right now.
