Saturday Blitz Vegas SEC Predictions Week 9

South Carolina Gamecocks at No. 5 Auburn Tigers

Line: Auburn by 17.5

The South Carolina Gamecocks have had three weeks to regroup thanks to a bye and then a game against Furman on the schedule after playing awful for three weeks. Now, they have another chance to prove their coach in Steve Spurrier wrong and actually show that they are a good team. The first order of businesS? Shoring up the defensive transition to a 3-4. This defense actually has lots of experience, but the transition has been brutal, evidenced by the scores. It’s going to be tougher against a complex offense like Auburn this week, so the defense has to avoid all mental lapses. Dylan Thompson has to be accurate on offense as well to give this team a chance.

Auburn, meanwhile, should just run its efficient offense with Nick Marshall and Gus Malzahn and make sure it leaves the Gamecocks as confused as possible. This defensive transition is bound to cause the mental errors to continue, so they should take advantage of it and try to score at will, just like Texas A&M did. The Tigers also have a good defense and should keep Thompson from getting into any kind of rhythm. But it also has to be ultra-prepared for any wrinkle Spurrier might throw at them, as the genius ol’ ball coach is capable of doing that in his game plans from time to time.

Prediction

South Carolina will put up a fight, but there’s no way they win this game on the road. The Tigers have too advanced of an offense for this new defense to stop, and Thompson is not going to be able to make too many plays against a loaded Auburn defense. Auburn runs away with an easy win at home.
