House Targaryen = House South Carolina

“Never Cower”

Ever since Daenerys Targaryen has controlled her family name, she has steadily gained power. Her presence was felt the moment she started conquering Free Cities, and she’s been on the radar of people in Westeros ever since as a potential threat.

But she hasn’t been able to make the big decisive move towards the Iron Throne that everyone is waiting for. Troubles within her current empire are both testing her leadership and holding her back from the ultimate prize. Will she be able to take advantage of the unrest surrounding the Lannister family, or will internal struggles continue to keep her from crossing the Narrow Sea?

South Carolina is facing a very similar question. Substitute “Lannister family” with Alabama, and “crossing the Narrow Sea” with winning the SEC East, and you just about grasp their current situation. Ever since Steve Spurrier stepped in as head coach, the Gamecocks have proven themselves as fierce competitors within college football. But they have still struggled to make it to a national championship game.

And just when it seemed like the SEC East was opening up a bit, that maybe the Gamecocks could be gearing up for a solid 2014 run, troubles started to plague both the defense and the offense. They ended their season at 7-6, a record reminiscent of Spurrier’s third and fourth years of coaching at South Carolina and not a good representation of what he has built up to in more recent seasons.

Now everyone is looking to Spurrier, wondering what his next moves are to keep his program afloat and relevant.

Hopefully both Dany and Steve make some wise decisions.
