Former Virginia quarterback Greyson Lambert is transferring to Georgia, but will he be able to win the starting quarterback job this fall?

Greyson Lambert wasn’t the most high-profile transfer quarterback this spring with Everett Golson leaving Notre Dame for Florida State, but the former Virginia starter is headed to Georgia, according to ESPN’s Joe Schad, where he hopes to win the starting job.

Lambert announced in May that he would be leaving the Cavaliers after losing his top spot on the depth chart to Matt Johns after spring practice. He is a graduate transfer with two years of eligibility remaining and is eligible to play this fall.

He enters a crowded competition with sophomore Brice Ramsey, junior Faton Bauta and redshirt freshman Jacob Park competing for the right to succeed Hutson Mason under center, but he brings the most experience than the others after starting nine games at Virginia.

Lambert went 3-6 in his starts, throwing for 1,632 yards with 10 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He’s not going to come in and be the next Aaron Murray and put up huge numbers should he win the job. He’s not going to be the missing piece for that elusive SEC Championship. But what Lambert can do is provide depth at a position of need and his experience should be a valuable asset considering the others simply don’t have meaningful reps under their belt.

Ramsey is the front-runner to win the job after his showing at spring practice, but this competition is far from over and the addition of Lambert just threw a wrench into the fray for head coach Mark Richt. Having too many options at quarterback is never a bad thing, but the loser of this competition could be on the way out.

With five-star recruit Jacob Eason committed to Georgia and likely to garner early playing time, the possibility exists for Bauta or Park to transfer this year or next.
