Smothers is the No. 181 player in the class, the No. 30 wide receiver, and the No. 7 player in the state of Maryland per the 247Sports Composite Rankings. He was highly regarded across the country as he amassed 26 offers in total. For the Mountaineers, his recruitment was handled by wide receivers coach Lonnie Galloway.
The Mountaineers have been very active in Smothers’ recruitment as they extended an offer to him April 12, and then he attended a school camp on June 20. Things picked up this year as he attended their Junior Day on January 31, before the program made his list of ‘final six’ teams on June 25. He visited the campus one more time on July 25 before committing Wednesday.
With this commitment, the Mountaineer 2016 class is starting to form. With 17 commitments, Smothers is the first four-star commit. The class ranks No. 37 nationally and No. 4 in the Big 12 per the 247Sports Team Rankings.
Measuring at 5-foot-10, he is on the smaller side of the spectrum, but still a potent threat when he is on the field. He is able to use his speed to evade his defenders and once he catches the ball, he is able to accelerate and gain yards after the catch in bunches. In Smothers, West Virginia got an impact player who can be a potent threat to the passing game.
This is a huge get for a program that looks to separate themselves from the middle of the pack after going 7-6 a year ago. Landing an impact player like Smothers is certainly a start.
