Oregon running back Thomas Tyner is out for the season after having shoulder surgery.

The Oregon Ducks will be down a man heading into the 2015 season. On Sunday, it was announced that junior running back Thomas Tyner will be out for the entire season after having shoulder surgery.

Tyner’s father told Aaron Fentress of CSNNW that the injury was a result of a hit he took in the Washington game last season. Tyner suffered the injury on the opening kickoff when Washington’s Shaq Thompson hit him, forcing him to leave the game and causing him to not be able to return to action. Due to the injury he missed the following contest at Cal, but was able to return against Stanford and Utah. However, he hurt his arm against the Utes and did not return for three more contests per a report from Matt Prehm of 247Sports.

He rushed for 573 yards and five touchdowns on 113 carries last season.

This is a sizable loss for a Ducks team that ranked No. 10 in the county with 3,518 total rushing yards. Averaging 234.5 yards per game and 5.5 yards per carry, it was no secret that the Ducks explosive offense relied heavily on the run game and contributed to their success.

Luckily for Oregon they have one of the best sophomore running backs in the nation in Royce Freeman to rely on, but the depth will be tested at the position.

If there is one thing Oregon Ducks has been able to do over the years, it is adapt to the personnel on the roster. Although this loss may force the Ducks to change their strategy, they must maintain a “next-man-up mentality.” If they can do that, they will be just fine.
