The Florida Gators will use rotating quarterbacks for their season opener against New Mexico State.

The adage “twice as nice” will apply to the Florida Gators in their opener against New Mexico State. Gators head coach Jim McElwain told reporters Thursday that he will play two quarterbacks in the contest against the Aggies.

This comes on the heels of a good camp by redshirt freshman Will Grier who has battled with sophomore Treon Harris throughout camp. The two-quarterback system will be more of an eye test for McElwain who told the media he needs to see both signal-callers in game situations before designating a starter.

“I mean this,” McElwain told reporters, via GatorZone.com. “There isn’t a ‘timetable’ for quarterbacks. Need to see what they do live. How they elevate play around them.”

Following their game against New Mexico State, the Gators have one more contest against ECU before they begin an SEC slate that features some of the most talented teams in the country.

Harris threw for 1,019 yards, nine touchdowns, and four interceptions last season after finishing the season as the starter.

This is a great move by McElwain. A game against a lesser opponent gives the coaches a chance to evaluate the talent that they have and see who excels at a particular position and who may need to be moved.

As of now, nothing is set in stone. Harris undoubtedly has more experience but Grier appears to be a better fit for the offense. Very rarely does a quarterback battle stretch into the season, but it seems what is brewing in Gainesville will be an exception.
