Will Grier to start at QB for Florida Gators vs. East Carolina

Jim McElwain has changed his mind and will now start Will Grier for the Florida Gators against East Carolina on Saturday.

Treon Harris won the Florida starting quarterback job, for at least one week, but after starting the opener and faring well, Will Grier gets his chance to start against East Carolina.

This will be the first career start for the redshirt freshman who got his first taste of college football in the 61-13 win over New Mexico State and played very well, completing 16-of-18 for 166 yards and two touchdowns, albeit against a very poor opponent.

Harris didn’t do anything necessarily in the win to lose the game after he completed 14-of-19 passes for 215 yards and two touchdowns before giving way to Grier in the second quarter, but McElwain must have seen something he liked from Grier when he played in the second and third quarters and in practice to name him the starter.

Granted, McElwain could make Harris the starter for the next game and it wouldn’t be a shock to see this quarterback competition continue deep into the season, because neither has separated himself from the other, at least not yet.

But at some point, McElwain is going to have to settle on one of either Grier or Harris to establish some sort of consistency and rhythm to his offense. It’s still so early in the year and New Mexico State is far from being a legitimate test to gauge the effectiveness of either quarterback.

Do you think this will be the first of many starts for Grier at Florida or will it be a short-lived stay atop the Gators’ depth chart?
