Leonard Fournette is not better than Herschel Walker, not yet anyway

Leonard Fournette is taking over college football and one of the best college football running backs of all-time thinks he’s already better than he was.

He’s rushed for more yards in the first three games of the season than any player in the history of the FBS, he’s the overwhelming favorite to win the Heisman Trophy and he’s already being talked about as a transcendent NFL player.

LSU sophomore running back Leonard Fournette has been the story in the first month of the 2015 college football season and everyone, including former Georgia running back Herschel Walker has taken notice of what he’s done so far this year.

Fournette has been compared to Walker, who holds the SEC rushing record with the 1,891 yards he had as a sophomore, and that record could be in jeopardy with Fournette having 631 yards and an average of 210 yards per game. Walker has seen enough to think Fournette is better than he was, which is high praise considering Walker is widely considered the greatest college back of all-time.

“He’s better than I was,” Walker told TMZ Sports.

This is a noble and humble gesture from Walker and this is not a slight against Fournette but let’s see what he can do with the rest of his sophomore schedule before we go overboard. Fournette is the best player in college football and many in Baton Rouge are ready to build a statue of him outside Tiger Stadium but this is too early to have the argument about who is better.

It’s a disservice to Walker who ran for more than 1,600 yards as a true freshman and left Georgia with 5,259 yards and 49 touchdowns. He was a three-time All-American and finished in the top three in the Heisman three times, including winning as a junior in 1982.

Fournette is on the path toward being an all-time great, but he’s not better than Walker, yet.
