Georgia loss to Alabama could mean chaos for SEC East
We’re four weeks through the season but the SEC East has the potential to turn into a chaotic mess.
Georgia and Florida stand as the lone undefeated teams in the SEC East just a month into the college football season. Georgia faces Alabama on Saturday while Florida hosts Ole Miss. Despite their solid start, each team has a good chance of losing to their SEC West foes. The only thing preventing a massive ball of chaos from rolling into the SEC East is Georgia proving they legitimately are one of the better teams in the country.

The Bulldogs may very well be that good, but they certainly have an early test against Alabama to prove their worth. If Alabama and Ole Miss both win, it will leave everyone in the SEC East with at least one loss. South Carolina and Vanderbilt already have two conference losses and are unlikely to challenge for the division crown.
This leaves five teams in the East fighting for the right to play for the SEC Championship in Atlanta. Florida, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee and Georgia will likely all be fighting to win the division. Each team has the ability to both win and lose to any of the other four teams. The gap between teams is not as wide as it often is. This is sure to create must see television as no one will have any idea who will actually win the SEC East.
In years past, we have been able to count out Kentucky and Tennessee but I am not so sure this season. Tennessee’s inability to close out games aside, both teams are improved enough to beat the other teams in the division. This improvement creates even greater tension in the SEC East as what is normally a two team race is about to expand to a five team race.
Georgia and Florida have created early separation. Based on the first four games, does anyone really trust Florida? This is not to take away from their improvement from last year’s team, but they certainly have not jumped back into elite territory within the SEC. However, they have done enough early on to prevent us from completely dismissing their chances this early.
Georgia is the linchpin holding the division together. The Bulldogs are the Jenga puzzle that we are all waiting to see fall down. Is this finally Georgia’s year? It seems like this is the question we ask early in each college football season. We certainly will have a better idea based on how they perform against Alabama.
October starts the heart of the SEC schedule. The SEC East teams will have a number of games playing each other which normally begins to make the picture clearer for us. However, this time around it may cloud the division picture as more conference losses are likely to get handed out to the five contenders.
When that day comes, we will sit back and watch the chaos unfold until a trip to Atlanta is decided. Grab some popcorn as we will likely be waiting a while for this all to get sorted out.
