The Florida Gators made a statement Saturday night with a dominant performance on both sides of the football in a 38-10 victory over third-ranked Ole Miss.

Believe it or not, the Gators are back on top of the SEC East.

To the surprise of just about everyone, the No. 25 Florida Gators completely shut down the Ole Miss offense Saturday night in The Swamp, and with the help of Georgia’s loss to Alabama, announced themselves as the new favorites in the SEC East.

The third-ranked Rebels, who came in with the SEC’s top scoring offense (54.8 points per game), passing offense (344.5 yards per game), and total offense (544 yards per game), were held to 328 total yards, and just 259 in the air in a 38-10 loss. Florida sacked Ole Miss quarterback Chad Kelly four times and forced four turnovers – three fumbles and an interception by All-American cornerback Vernon Hargreaves III.

Ole Miss didn’t score at all in the first half, and didn’t find the end zone until Kelly found Markell Pack on a seven-yard pass and catch with 4:04 left in the fourth quarter. By that time, the outcome had long been decided.

On the other hand, Florida quarterback Will Grier completed 17 of 20 passes for 229 yards and four touchdowns in the first half alone – leading the way for a 25-0 halftime lead – and finished 24-for-29 for 271 yards. Considered questionable to play Saturday because he had battled flu-like symptoms much of the week, Grier’s first scoring pass was a 36-yarder to Demarcus Robinson.

Robinson led the Gators with eight receptions and 98 yards, and also made a highlight reel catch in the first half.

Grier also hooked up with Jake McGee on a two-yard score, Brandon Powell on a 77-yard touchdown, and Antonio Callaway on a 15-yarder to cap a 13-play, 91-yard drive with 20 seconds left in the second quarter.

Ole Miss kicker Gary Wunderlich, who missed a 29-yard field goal in the second quarter, finally put Ole Miss on the board with a field goal nine minutes into the second half. The Rebels grinded out a long 19-play, 70-yard drive, that melted more than nine minutes off the clock and ended with three negative yardage running plays after reaching 1st-and-Goal at the one-yard line.

Florida, now 5-0 and 3-0 in SEC play, are in the driver’s seat in the SEC East. They travel to Columbia next week to face the two-time defending division champion Missouri Tigers. The Rebels, who are now 4-1, but still controls their own destiny in the SEC West thanks to a victory over Alabama two weeks ago, take a two-week break from conference play before hosting Texas A&M Oct. 24.
