Offensive coordinator Mike Locksley takes over as the interim head coach and assistant coach Lyndon Johnson has also been relieved of his duties.
Edsall was hired by Maryland in 2011 from UConn and struggled in his first two seasons. However, he led the Terps to a 7-5 regular season record in 2013 and briefly had the team in the top 25. In 2014, Maryland’s first in the Big Ten, the Terps finished the regular season with a second straight 7-5 record and picked up an impressive five Big Ten wins.
Though he was successful the last two seasons, Edsall’s team really struggled this season. Maryland is 2-4 and 0-2 in the Big Ten. The breaking point for Edsall was an embarrassing home loss to Bowling Green in Week 2. He almost went out with a bang as the Terps hung tough with the defending champion Buckeyes before Ohio State pulled away late.
The Terrapins are in the middle of a three-game losing streak and next play in two weeks when Penn State comes to M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore.
