Two women trying out to be next kicker of the Florida Gators
Florida Gators head coach Jim McElwain had open auditions to try out for the kicker spot on the team and a pair of women are attempting to be the next Gators place kicker.
Jim McElwain had a casting call as he issued a plea to the Florida student body to try their hand at kicking field goals as the Gators are looking for a walk-on kicker for insurance after Jorge Powell was hurt against LSU and is lost for the rest of the year.
Further, Austin Hardin who Powell replaced is recovering from a leg injury, so Florida is checking out the student body to see if anyone can boot the ball through the uprights and give the team some insurance in the event that Hardin can’t give it a go.
In total, 77 students came in for the open tryout, including two women who hope to break the gender barrier and kick an extra point or field goal in a game for the SEC East leaders.
A female kicker isn’t unprecedented as a few have kicked and scored in a college game, but it’s still very, very, very uncommon, but it doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be given a fair shot just like a man. Kudos to two women who put themselves out there and tried to make some history.
Do you think we’ll ever see a female kicker suit up for an SEC game? Why or why not? Let us know in the comments section below and chime in on social media. But let’s keep it civil and remember this is 2015 and women can do everything (usually better) than a man can.
