Mark Richt to meet with Maryland about head coaching job

Former Georgia head coach Mark Richt is talking to Maryland about their coaching vacancy and a meeting could happen as soon as Tuesday according to reports.

Less than one day from losing his job as the head coach of the Georgia Bulldogs, Mark Richt is reportedly prepared to discuss the head coaching vacancy with the Maryland Terrapins.

According to Jeff Ermann of Inside Maryland Sports (247Sports Maryland affiliate), Richt and Maryland have spoken about the opening and a meeting could come as soon as Tuesday.

At a press conference on Monday, Richt said he was open to coaching again, but him landing at Maryland would come as a surprise, especially considering his alma mater, Miami, has an opening.

Maryland would obviously love to seal the deal with Richt because he could be a home run for the program that has fallen on hard times under Randy Edsall who was fired midseason and the Terps slumped to a 3-9 year.

More from Big Ten

Maryland would be an attractive program for Richt because of the recruiting footprint on the eastern seaboard, facilities and the Big Ten East could be the toughest division in college football with Michigan State, Ohio State, Michigan and Penn State. Plus, Maryland’s associate athletic director is Damon Evans who was his athletic director at Georgia from 2004 to 2010.

Richt mentioned he looks forward to coaching quarterbacks and calling plays again and should Maryland and Richt agree to terms here, he would be able to coach Dwayne Haskins who is committed to Maryland and is the nation’s No. 6 pro-style quarterback recruit, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

I would be surprised to see Richt jump right back in coaching this year and with this team. It’s a long way to go from simply talking to having an in-person meeting to agreeing on a contract, but there’s at least the chance for Maryland to hire a coach who sports a 145-51 career record over 15 years.

Richt would have success at Maryland, so I wouldn’t dispute that, but if Richt is ready for a new challenge, I think he would be better off going to Miami instead of Maryland.
