Florida Gators quarterback Treon Harris is switching positions and will play wide receiver and that’s in his best interest and in the best interest of the Florida football team.

Treon Harris is done playing quarterback. The rising junior quarterback who started nine games last year as a sophomore will switch to wide receiver and participate in spring practice looking to win a job as one of the Gators pass catchers, according to Gridiron Now.

Harris began the season as the starter before Will Grier took over and ran with the job until he was suspended for a calendar year after testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug and subsequently transferred.

He didn’t do very much in his opportunity as the Gators starting quarterback, completing 50.6 percent of his passes for 1,676 yards and nine touchdowns and six interceptions as a sophomore last season. He also had 238 rushing yards as the Gators limped to a 4-4 finish with Harris under center to close the year.

With Harris no longer in the picture for the starting quarterback job transfer, Luke Del Rio is the favorite to win the job over grad transfer Austin Appleby and incoming four-star freshman Feleipe Franks.

Should Del Rio struggle, don’t sleep on Franks working his way up the depth chart and making it hard for head coach Jim McElwain to keep him on the bench. Franks is the quarterback of the future to be sure, but he could also be the quarterback of the present.

Harris clearly wasn’t the answer at quarterback so making the move to wide receiver is in his best interest to have a shot at a professional career. The 5-11, 195-pound Harris has quick feet and could be dangerous in the open field with the ball in his hands when he can master the route tree and nuances of the position.
