Former Florida Gators quarterback Will Grier is transferring to play for the West Virginia Mountaineers.

Will Grier has found a new home as the former Florida starting quarterback is transferring to play for Dana Holgorsen and the West Virginia Mountaineers.

The news was first reported by ESPN’s Travis Haney and later confirmed by West Virginia.

Grier started six games for the Gators last year after relieving Treon Harris after the season opener and led the team to an undefeated start, including a win over No. 3 Ole Miss. He completed 106-of-161 passes for 1,204 yards, 10 touchdowns and three interceptions before he was suspended for failing a drug test and lost a year of eligibility.

He tested positive for a banned substance and was suspended for a calendar year. Grier will have to sit out the 2016 season per NCAA transfer rules and will have two years of eligibility remaining.

The former Parade National Player of the Year and No. 2 pro-style quarterback recruit, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, is an ideal fit for the Mountaineers pass-happy offense.

Grier has the skill-set that should see him sit comfortably in the pocket and deliver strikes up and down the field. He will be the most talented quarterback West Virginia has had since Geno Smith and should be the clear-cut starter in 2016.

The inactivity from so much time on the field will be a concern as he reacclimates himself to the field, but he should be able to run the scout team offense while he sits the upcoming season to knock off some of the rust and prepare himself for 2017 and beyond.

Even though he will miss so much time, Grier needed a fresh start after the suspension even though it will hurt Jim McElwain’s Gators as they prepare for the 2016 season. The Gators have Luke Del Rio, Austin Appleby and true freshman Feleipe Franks competing for the starting job.
