Oklahoma transfer Trevor Knight named the starting quarterback for the Texas A&M Aggies.

Kevin Sumlin saw his top two quarterbacks on the Texas A&M depth chart decide to transfer out of the program within one week of each other as the program looked to be on unstable footing.

Kyle Allen was the first to go as the former No. 1 quarterback recruit decided College Station wasn’t the best place for him and Kyler Murray, the No. 1 dual-threat quarterback recruit of 2015 and Gatorade National Player of the Year, followed him out of town.

Allen is at Houston while Murray is at Oklahoma, but the Aggies also saw a quarterback transfer in as former Oklahoma starting quarterback Trevor Knight saw an opportunity at A&M and jumped at it.

After a strong showing in the team’s spring game on Saturday, Sumlin named Knight his starting quarterback for the season opener against Josh Rosen and the UCLA Bruins.

Knight looked like he was headed toward stardom as a freshman in 2013 when he threw for 348 yards and four touchdowns in the Sugar Bowl win against the Alabama Crimson Tide.

He was unable to build on that performance as a sophomore in 2014, however, with 14 touchdowns and 12 interceptions before losing his job to  Baker Mayfield who led the Sooners to the Big 12 title and College Football Playoff last year.

Knight threw for 246 yards and two touchdowns as the offense scored three touchdowns with him leading the offense.

He beat out former walk-on Jake Hubenak who started for the Aggies in the Music City Bowl loss to Louisville will serve as Knight’s backup.

Knight and Texas A&M open their season at home against UCLA on September 3.
