Brian Kelly and his Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team are back on the gridiron for the team’s annual spring game.

Notre Dame was two plays away from making an appearance in the College Football Playoff last year despite the season-ending injury to starting quarterback Malik Zaire.

The broken ankle opened the door for DeShone Kizer to come in and he was a two-point conversion away from upsetting Clemson and a field goal away from beating Stanford.

If those plays go the other way, Notre Dame likely finds itself in the Playoff over the one-loss Michigan State Spartans.

That is all in the past, however, as Notre Dame takes the first steps toward getting there this year with Saturday’s spring game.

Zaire and Kizer will have all eyes on them as this could be the best quarterback competition we see across college football this spring and later in the fall. My money is on Kizer holding the job after what he did last year, but then again, Zaire already beat him out for the job once, so the spring game will be telling to see who has the upper-hand.

Besides the quarterback competition, the Irish have to find a replacement for speedster Will Fuller who declared for the NFL Draft and could be a first round pick after running a 4.32 at the Combine. Notre Dame also needs to establish the pecking order in the backfield after C.J. Prosise also entered the NFL Draft.

The toughest player to replace, however, could be All-American outside linebacker Jaylon Smith who likely would have been a top-five pick if not for a devastating knee injury suffered in the team’s Fiesta Bowl loss to Ohio State.
