Johnny Manziel warning signs were there at Texas A&M
Johnny Manziel’s NFL career and life are in jeopardy. The domestic violence allegations could put him behind bars, but his destructive lifestyle could cost him his life. At Texas A&M, he was infamous for his off-the-field trouble.
Former Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel has hit rock bottom. His recent indictment in a domestic violence case involving former girlfriend Colleen Crowley is disturbing. Although it is unclear whether he committed the act. His behavior before the event doesn’t help his case. The all night clubbing, trashing a rental house and addiction are what define his NFL career.
However, Manziel’s spiral out of control began his freshman year at Texas A&M. In the summer before the start of the 2012 season, Manziel was arrested for a bar fight. Manziel was drunk and underage at the time of the altercation and he had a fake ID on him.
It wasn’t a good look. The bar fight nearly cost him the job, but he still earned the starting job for the Aggies. He would go on to win the Heisman Trophy and the first incident disappeared.

Fast forward to the summer of 2013, Manziel is asked to leave the Manning Passing Academy. He was hungover and overslept one of the camp’s events. He was asked by the first family of the NFL to participate in the camp, and he couldn’t care less. Manziel had an opportunity to work with the league’s best and he’d rather party.
Manziel is suspended the first half of the opening game against Rice. He proceeds to have a great second half, but it was marred by his taunting of a Rice player. Sure, it could’ve been just a cocky kid talking trash, but it proved he lacked respect.
He already embarrassed the university with his autograph debacle and bar fight now he was out of control on the field. He finished the season without much other news, but he didn’t stop the partying at all. He made it look normal.
Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin didn’t keep him in check. He let him run wild because he knew his best chance of winning was with Manziel on the field. The Aggies were 20-6 including two January bowl wins during Manziel’s tenure. The success was so high that the partying seemed trivial and nothing to be concerned about.
Enter the NFL, Manziel is selected in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns. The trouble began right from the start. About two months after he was drafted, he was caught partying multiple times. The Browns thought they drafted their franchise quarterback and two months later they were already worried.

During his first on-field action, he put his disrespectful attitude on display. Against the Washington Redskins, Manziel heard some trash talk from the Redskins’ bench and he responded by flipping them off.
The troubled quarterback continued to party the 2014 NFL season away. He sat the bench and didn’t seem too concerned with wasting the Browns’ time. It became clear he would rather party than be a starting quarterback in the NFL.
Manziel looked like he was finding his way in 2015. He went to rehab, he played the good backup to Josh McCown. When called upon, he played well and flashed his athleticism. Unfortunately, he couldn’t maintain it. The wheels fell off and his relationship with Colleen Crowley cost him dearly. In the end, he may never play another down of football.

But the most concerning part of this story is that he may not live long enough to learn from his mistakes. He is out of control and it’s a tragedy. He showed he could play in the NFL, but he didn’t want to. His coaches were more concerned with winning than getting him help.
