Charlie Strong says Texas-Texas A&M working to rekindle rivalry game
Texas Longhorns head football coach Charlie Strong remains optimistic the rivalry between his team and the Texas A&M Aggies will soon be rekindled.
One of the greatest rivalries in college football came to an end when Texas A&M ditched the Big 12 and their rivalry with Texas to join the SEC and cash in as a member of the premier conference in college football.
From a business perspective, you can understand why Texas A&M would leave the Big 12 for the SEC, but from a fan perspective, it was a tough blow to see their rivalry game at the end of the year on Thanksgiving come to an end.
But after a few years of not playing the rivalry game that began in 1894 and had 117 more games after that first meeting, it sounds like there’s a chance it could be rekindled.

Texas head coach Charlie Strong was asked at the Touchdown Club of Houston if there’s anything being done to play A&M again and he said, “they’re trying to work out something right now where we go play the Aggies.”
Now, there are some hurdles that need to be cleared before they two meet on the gridiron again.
First, the chances of a Thanksgiving day game seem remote considering the conference scheduling they’ll be playing late in the year. So a potential home-and-home series would have to be early in the season before conference play gets underway.

Logistics can be worked out with time, but the biggest takeaway is the two sides seem committed to playing once again. With both fan bases wanting the game to happen, there is a great chance of it happening at some point in the next few years, possibly as soon as 2018.
Whether Strong or Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin is on the sidelines for the game remains to be seen. But Texas and Texas A&M playing again is more a matter of when, rather than if, and that’s a big win for college football.
