Former Baylor football head coach Art Briles and the university have agreed to a contract settlement.

One day after Art Briles lashed out at Baylor for what he determined was a wrongful termination that made him out to be the scapegoat, the two parties have agreed to a contract settlement.

The settlement was reported by Jason King of Bleacher Report although terms of the settlement were not disclosed. Earlier in the week, Chip Brown of Horns Digest reported a settlement for Briles could range from $15-25 million.

Briles had eight years and $40 million remaining on his contract before he was dismissed in late May after the releasing of the Pepper Hamilton investigation was revealed. The report documented the school’s mishandling of sexual assault allegations against Baylor football players, including who have since been convicted of rape.

There were rumblings earlier in the week that big-money boosters were making a plea, or a veiled threat to get Briles back on the sidelines after serving a one-game suspension or they would pull their financial backing of the university and program.

That never came to pass and Briles is officially done with Baylor with this contract settlement. Now, it remains to be seen what’s next for Briles who definitely won’t coach this season and it’s unclear if he’ll ever get a college coaching job again. For those same reasons, it is hard to imagine him returning to his roots in high school football. If Briles is to get back into coaching, perhaps he could get a consulting job with an NFL team in an attempt to rehab his image, but again, that seems unlikely today.

Baylor hired former Wake Forest head coach Jim Grobe to be their interim head coach and retained all of Briles’ assistants.
