Texas Recruiting: 4-star OT JP Urquidez commits to Longhorns
The Texas recruiting class picked up the commitment from offensive tackle JP Urquidez, two days after Baylor released him from his LOI.
A former Baylor Bear is now a Texas Longhorn. Saturday, 2017 four-star offensive tackle JP Urquidez (Copperas Cove. Copperas Cove, TX) committed to the program after Baylor released him from his National Letter of Intent Thursday.
He made the announcement via Twitter and this news was first reported by Chris Hummer of 247Sports.
Urquidez is the No. 244 player in the ’16 class, No. 22 offensive tackle, and No. 37 player in the state of Texas per the 247Sports Composite Rankings.
Texas was one of the 26 schools that offered Urquidez, but he decided to go to Baylor, committing there in April of 2015.
He was going to be one of the premiere players in the Bears’ ’16 class but elected to go elsewhere in light of the scandal that has shaken the program to its core.

Matt Mattox, who doubles as the Longhorns’ running game coordinator and offensive line coach was the primary recruiter for Urquidez while tight ends coach Jeff Traylor handled the duties of being his secondary recruiter.
Urquidez is a welcome addition to a very solid 2016 Longhorn troop. Boasting 26 commitments in total, including three of the four-star variety, the class ranks No. 8 nationally and is tops in the Big 12 per the 247Sports Team Rankings.
Urquidez is a tremendous blocker and can use all of his 6-foot-6, 300-pound frame to bully his man. He is particularly efficient in the trenches and can help the Longhorn running backs get that extra 2-3 yards for the touchdown.
